2017 IMSA COTA
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:15:19 PM »
Fisico and Toni are currently 2nd in GTLM with 15 minutes to go. Their first session was rather tough (PDF link) but they seem to be getting on top of things nicely now. And Fisico looks happy with things :)

It is particularly well-timed because Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is Risi Competizione's home race.

Fisico nearly got pole! He was only 0.32 seconds away from it, and ended up in P2. He spoke about it afterwards, and he seems content, if slightly disappointed.

Before that, Fisico and Toni were quickest in final practise. Things are looking good for tomorrow's race, which will be 1:35 pm CT (local time) / 7:35 pm BST / 9:35 pm Finnish time.

Fisico's been doing sportscar racing for 8 years, and the grid announcer still managed to trip over the pronounciation of "Giancarlo Fisichella". I had no idea that was possible. Oh well, the formation lap's starting.

The #52 PC car has a problem already, and the race hasn't started yet...

First-lap mess in GTLM again! The #4 Corvette, #67 Ford and the #62 Risi are all substantially damaged  >:(

Full-course yellow! The #67 Ford is stopped on track, the #4 Corvette that spun has continued, and I'm not sure what is happening to Fisico.

It looks like the #66 Ford is at fault - it struck Fisico, who was turned into the #67 Ford, and the #4 Corvette was swiped in the process. The commentators have confirmed that "Fisichella was minding his own business". The #62 Risi has pitted, shedding carbon fibre and glass. Fisico has gone out of the car and it's not clear he'll be able to continue.

"Somebody tapped me into Turn 1 and I lost control. There was nothing to do". The crew is reported to be as upset as Giancarlo.

#66 Ford appears to have a broken suspension and is heading for the pits.

The #2 and #90 cars crashed and have pitted, and the #912 Porsche has some damage too, possibly another innocent tagged in the GTLM collision.

None of this is distracting me from feeling that this is a massive shame. Fisico, Toni and Risi deserved so much better :(

It gets worse. Apparently the whole point of putting Fisico in the car to start was to make sure the car got further than it did in Long Beach. It technically did... ...it managed half a lap more, I suppose...

Green flag! There's only 4 GTLMs left that aren't damaged, but I'm having trouble focusing on them.

There was one funny moment for Fisico and Toni. They, along with a couple of their rivals, dressed up as cowboys at some point during the weekend. There is a little video with it, and you can certainly tell what Fisico thinks of some of the outfits ;)
