2017 IMSA Virginia
« on: August 22, 2017, 09:57:25 PM »
The long, long summer is over, and Fisico is about to get back into a racing car. Here's a Spotter's Guide so you can see what all the cars will look like (the Risi is bright red as usual).

First practise is at 1:30 pm local time, 6:30 pm BST or 8:30 pm Finnish time. Unfortunately I am at a running race and won't be able to make any comments until (probably) Saturday.

The FansWEC website has an item on Risi's return (in French). The most notable thing mentioned is that the BoP has changed in the last 4 races, without any Ferraris to reference it with, so it will be hard to know where the Risi stands in comparison to its rivals.

Also, it appears that Toni and Fisico have been playing tennis. Rather competitively. Giancarlo won 7-4, 6-4... ...and poor Toni appears to have had to run round the tennis court dragging a net behind him as some sort of forfeit. (I would say "probably best if I don't challenge Fisico to tennis", but my aim at tennis is so bad that we would spend half the match trying to find the tennis balls, which would probably be considered forfeit enough...)

We have also a Sportscar365 news round-up, that reiterates that the plan is to complete the season, and that the third driver for the Petit Le Mans remains undecided.

About halfway through Practise 3... ...and Risi and Toni Vilander are back at the top of the timesheets. Yes!

Fisico and Toni ended up 4th on the grid for the race today. I can't tell quite when the race starts, ma in bocca al lupo per la gara, Fisico, Toni e Risi!

Got back from a family gathering just in time to find out that Fisico and Toni made it to the podium :D

Fisico was a bit... ...adventurous with his driving. This resulted in some super photos, including this one of Fisico in the air, having kicked up some dust just outside the track limit. There was apparently another off-track excursion that lost a place half-an-hour before the race ended, but Fisico, to his credit, quickly got the place back. Together with equally good driving from Toni and some excellent pitwork from Risi, the team rose from P6 part-way through the race to their eventual P3.

Before the race, Fisico had some fun in the autograph session with Bibendum (the Michelin mascot) and also did a (Youtube) track guide.

Haven't seen Fisico's comments on the race yet, but Toni is happy. Risi Competizione got Spirit of the Race for the way in which it returned to IMSA, which makes me happy :)

Risi Competizione has thanked everyone for their support, and said this was an important race because it was the comeback.

According to Kapersky Motorsport, Fisico and Toni also got the fastest lap of the race. There is a podium photo among the ones Kapersky posted, and our favourite driver's efforts have been rewarded by a bronze Bibendum trophy that looks quite cute. Fisico did a short video saying "Ciao, Carolina!" with Bibendum, so I have a feeling she will particularly appreciate this trophy.

Ferrari Races has given a more complete account of the Virginia race from Risi's perspective. Highlights:

- Fisico got barged off-track on the first lap. Thankfully, this time no DNF resulted.

- Toni led the race at one point.

- Fisico got the car back into 3rd because he was able to navigate past an accident between the #4 Chevrolet (Milner) and the #66 Ford (Muller).

- Risi won the Green Challenge Award for the most economical finisher.

Toni has written a column for Sportscar 365. The Risi team can't go home yet because their city - Houston - is flooded. Other than that, Toni seems very upbeat.

Some of the lap data for Virginia has been published. Not only did Fisico set the fastest lap, but his lap average was also the fastest. For that matter, even Fisico's slowest lap was quicker than the fastest lap done by all but 10 of his rivals.
